Fleet Coverage Basics
What a fleet policy covers, which vehicles qualify and who can drive.
What is commercial fleet insurance?
Fleet insurance covers multiple business vehicles under one commercial auto policy, with one renewal date, one bill and coverage that can be tailored vehicle by vehicle.
How many vehicles count as a fleet?
Many insurance companies treat five or more vehicles as a fleet, but we insure businesses with one vehicle or hundreds and move you to fleet programs as you grow.
What does a fleet policy cover?
Typical coverage includes auto liability, physical damage (collision and comprehensive), uninsured motorist, medical payments, hired and non-owned auto, and motor truck cargo for vehicles that haul goods.
What types of vehicles can be on a fleet policy?
Cars, cargo vans, pickups, service trucks, box trucks, dump trucks, tractor-trailers and specialty vehicles, often all on the same policy.
What is hired and non-owned auto coverage?
It protects your business when employees drive their own cars for work errands or when you rent or borrow vehicles. Personal auto policies may not respond to business use, so most companies need it.
Who is allowed to drive our fleet vehicles?
Insurance companies review each driver’s motor vehicle record, license type and experience. Keeping a driver list with clean records is one of the biggest factors in fleet pricing.
Can we add or remove vehicles during the policy term?
Yes. Send us the VIN and garaging address and we can add a vehicle and issue a new ID card, usually the same day. Removed vehicles are typically credited back.
Do fleets need an umbrella or excess policy?
Often. Many contracts require higher liability limits than a primary auto policy provides, and a commercial umbrella adds that protection at a lower cost.
Lowering Fleet Costs & Managing Risk
Safety programs, telematics, claims and what we need to quote.
How can we lower our fleet insurance premium?
Hire experienced drivers, check MVRs regularly, use a written safety program, install telematics or dash cams, choose higher deductibles and pay in full. We also re-market your fleet each year.
Do telematics and dash cams lower fleet insurance costs?
Many insurance companies offer credits or better pricing for fleets that use telematics, and dash cam video can help prove fault and close claims faster.
What happens if an employee has an accident in a company vehicle?
Make sure everyone is safe, call police if needed, take photos and report the claim right away. We help you report the claim, get rental or replacement vehicles moving and follow up with the adjuster.
Do we need commercial auto if employees use their personal cars?
If your business does not own vehicles but employees drive for work, hired and non-owned auto coverage protects the business from lawsuits after an accident.
Can you insure fleets that operate in several states?
Yes. We insure fleets based in Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, including vehicles that travel across state lines.
What are loss runs and why do you need them?
Loss runs are reports from your current and past insurers showing claims history. Insurance companies usually ask for three to five years of loss runs to price a fleet accurately.
Do you provide ID cards and certificates for every vehicle?
Yes. We issue auto ID cards for each vehicle and certificates of insurance for customers, general contractors and landlords, usually the same business day.
What do you need for a fleet insurance quote?
A vehicle list with VINs, a driver list with dates of birth and license numbers, a description of your operations, your current declarations page and loss runs. Call (301) 386-0900 or use our quote form.
