Business Insurance FAQ

Clear answers for Maryland small businesses, contractors and salons about the coverage that keeps you open.

Liability, BOPs & Workers Comp

Core coverage for Maryland small businesses and employers.

What does general liability insurance cover?

General liability covers claims that your business caused bodily injury or property damage to someone else, such as a customer slipping in your shop, plus advertising injury like libel. It also pays legal defense costs.

What is the difference between general liability and a BOP?

General liability covers only liability claims. A business owner policy combines general liability with commercial property and often business income coverage, usually at a better price than separate policies.

How much does small business insurance cost?

It depends on your industry, revenue, payroll, location, claims history and the limits you choose. Because each insurance company prices risk differently, we compare multiple companies to find the best value for your business.

Does Maryland require workers compensation for one employee?

Yes. Maryland requires most employers to carry workers comp once they have even one employee, including part-time workers.

How is workers comp premium calculated?

Premium is based on your payroll, the job classification codes for the work your employees do and your claims history (experience modification). Your final premium is set after a year-end payroll audit.

What is a workers comp audit?

At the end of the policy term, the insurance company compares your actual payroll to the estimate used to price the policy. You may owe more or get money back. We help you prepare records and review the results.

Do I need insurance for 1099 subcontractors?

Possibly. If your subcontractors do not carry their own workers comp and general liability, your insurance company may charge you premium for them at audit. Always collect certificates of insurance from subs.

Contractors, Salons & Specialty Coverage

Certificates, additional insureds, property, auto and more.

What insurance do contractors need in Maryland?

Most contractors carry general liability, commercial auto, tools and equipment (inland marine) and workers comp. Maryland Home Improvement Commission licensing also has insurance requirements, and many GCs require additional insured status.

What is an additional insured?

An additional insured is a person or company, such as a landlord or general contractor, that is added to your liability policy so it is protected for claims arising from your work. Many contracts require it.

What is commercial property insurance?

Commercial property covers your building, equipment, inventory and furniture against fire, theft, storms and other covered losses. Business income coverage can replace lost income while you recover.

What insurance does a salon or barbershop need?

Salons typically need general liability, professional liability for services like color, nails and waxing, property coverage for equipment and workers comp for employees. Booth renters usually need their own policy.

Does my business need commercial auto insurance?

If your business owns vehicles, or employees drive for work, you need commercial auto. Hired and non-owned auto coverage protects you when employees use their own or rented vehicles for business errands.

What is a commercial umbrella policy?

A commercial umbrella adds liability limits above your general liability, commercial auto and employer's liability policies. Larger contracts often require umbrella limits.

Can you insure condominium and homeowners associations?

Yes. We insure community associations with master property, general liability, directors and officers, crime and fidelity, and umbrella coverage, and we turn around certificates quickly for property managers.
